FAQ
1 Are Havanese easy to housebreak / train?
Yes! Havanese are very intelligent and trainable. They love to please their family, and are quick to do what you want them to do if you make it clear what you want. Consistency is a must! When potty training, be sure to take them outside at times when its more likely they will have to go ( after eating, napping, or playtime, etc.). If you are using a crate for your pup ( which we strongly recommend ) take him directly outside when you let him out of his crate. Also, give him a chance to relieve himself right before you put him back into the crate for a nap. Dogs won’t soil their space if they have any other area. However,Havy’s have little bladders, and can only hold it so long! So, give your Havy frequent opportunity to go where you want them to. When they do go, make a big deal about it! Give him a treat, lots of lovin’, and praise, praise, praise! You’ll be amazed how fast these little Heavenly Hav’s catch on!!
2 Are Havanese good with children?
Havanese are excellent kids dogs! Especially ours! They have silly, clownish personalities, and love to play! They don’t tend to get snappy or grumpy, even in old age, as some toy breeds do. They remain energetic and playful their entire lives. ( If you do happen to see a cranky Hav, there is almost always an underlying health problem. I know Im cranky if I’m in pain, aren’t you? ) If Hav’s are raised in a home with multiple children, they will develop different “games” to play with each child. They will lie perfectly still to let little girls play “beauty shop” with clips and ribbons, and then off they go faster than a speeding bullet to chase the boys! Basically any activity a youngster can come up with that gives the Hav attention will quickly become a favorite!
3 Do Havanese bark a lot? What do they sound like?
Havanese are pretty quiet dogs, actually. They hardly bark, whine, mutter, grumble, growl or squeak! They will announce an arrival to the home, not just strangers but once you are in and properly greeted, it is over. They make good watch dogs, as long as you are watching for anything that is new! Their bark is deeper than most toy dogs. It sounds like it should come from much larger dogs. People visiting our home for the first time are surprised that all that noise came from the little “pip-squeek” dogs now waiting attentively hoping to be petted!
4 Are Havanese clean dogs?
Yes! Havanese are considered a non shedding breed. They are hypoallergenic, and suitable for most allergy sufferers. They are normally clean eaters and drinkers.
5 How long do Havanese live?
Havanese are a healthy, hearty breed, even though they are classified as a toy breed. They can live 12-15 years or more, with proper care.
